چکیده

This paper uses the information-theoretic machinery developed in IF 2] to relate the way error is handled in the sciences to the problems of non-monotonic reasoning. In Information Flow in Distributed Systems 2] (hereinafter IF) Jerry Seligman and I develop a mathematical theory of information. One problem tackled there that of accounting for the sorts of exceptions to law-like regularities associated with information ow that are also traditionally associated with non-monotonic reasoning. Another problem addressed is that of reconciling everyday common sense theories with scientiic theories. Again, non-monotonicity becomes an issue one has to face since if human reasoning is essentially non-monotonic but scientiic reasoning is classical (hence monotonic), there would seem to be a serious obstacle to reconciling the two. In this paper I want to use the tools from IF to further explore these issues.

S-APPROXIMATION SPACES: A FUZZY APPROACH

In this paper, we study the concept of S-approximation spaces in fuzzy set theory and investigate its properties. Along introducing three pairs of lower and upper approximation operators for fuzzy S-approximation spaces, their properties under different assumptions, e.g. monotonicity and weak complement compatibility are studied. By employing two thresholds for minimum acceptance accuracy and m...

Propositional fuzzy logics based on Frankt - norms : A comparisonErich

Among various approaches to fuzzy logics, we have chosen two of them, which are built up in a similar way. Although starting from diierent basic logical connectives, they both use interpretations based on Frank t-norms. Diierent interpretations of the implication lead to diierent axiomatizations, but most logics studied here are complete. We compare the properties, advantages and disadvantages ...

Nonmonotonicity and Human Probabilistic Reasoning

Nonmonotonic logics allow—contrary to classical (monotone) logics— for withdrawing conclusions in the light of new evidence. Nonmonotonic reasoning is often claimed to mimic human common sense reasoning. Only a few studies, though, have investigated this claim empirically. system p is a central, broadly accepted nonmonotonic reasoning system that proposes basic rationality postulates. We previo...

Package-Based Description Logics

We present the syntax and semantics of a modular ontology language SHOIQP to support context-specific reuse of knowledge from multiple ontologies. A SHOIQP ontology consists of multiple ontology modules (each of which can be viewed as a SHOIQ ontology) and concept, role and nominal names can be shared by "importing'' relations among modules. SHOIQP supports contextualized interpretation, i.e., ...

L. Descalço on the Injectivity of the Leibniz Operator

The class of weakly algebrizable logics is defined as the class of logics having monotonic and injective Leibniz operator. We show that “monotonicity” cannot be discarded on this definition, by presenting an example of a system with injective and non monotonic Leibniz operator. We also show that the non injectivity of the non protoalgebraic inf-sup fragment of the Classic Propositional Calculus...
